We are suspending sales outside the US, with the following exceptions:
- Australia
- Canada
- Japan
- New Zealand
- Norway
- United Kingdom
- South Africa
- Switzerland
Recent laws in many countries have established VAT, GST, or similar tax requirements on foreign companies selling ebooks to customers in those countries. In many cases, these requirements apply with no threshold of sales volume, which means that we would need to register to pay tax for even a single sale in some of these countries.
The wide diversity of such rules, and the cost to register for, calculate, and pay these taxes make it prohibitively expensive for a small publisher to sell directly to customers in those countries. For example, in the EU, it is necessary to handle all tax transactions through an intermediary, the cheapest of which would cost more than our entire eBook revenue in the EU.
Until we can find an affordable way to manage these taxes, we have no choice but to suspend sales outside the US, with the exceptions noted above. We are actively looking to identify countries where there are no such requirements, and we will open sales in those countries as soon as possible.
